Red Sox’ Vaughn Grissom expected to be placed on the injured list with hamstring injury
Red Sox second baseman Vaughn Grissom is expected to begin the month of June the same way his season started: on the injured list with a hamstring injury.
Grissom suffered a right hamstring strain while running to first base after grounding out in the third inning against the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
The infielder was seen grabbing at the back of his leg as he was running out the play; he was removed from the game after the injury.
Red Sox skipper Alex Cora told reporters that Grissom will likely land on the 10-day IL with this latest injury. He also called it a “mild strain” for Grissom.
“Pretty frustrating,” Grissom said to reporters postgame. “Trying to dig one out. ... Obviously very unexpected. It just grabbed on me.”
Grissom missed the first 32 games of the season with a left hamstring strain. Reporters asked him if his new hamstring injury felt similar to the one he had previously this season.
“Right now, it’s too early, I guess, to tell,” Grissom said. "Obviously, be careful, and be safe with it, and try to get back as soon as possible,” Grissom added. “But just take it day by day.”
The Red Sox are limited on options to recall from the WooSox that are already on the 40-man roster. Bobby Dalbec seems like the most logical option, with catcher Tyler Heineman as the only position player on the 40-man roster.
Enmanuel Valdez is expected to get more time at second base following his call-up last week.
“He was our starting second baseman early in the season,” manager Alex Cora said about Valdez. “We liked the way he played defense, too, early in the season. So we’ll see where we’re at. We’re going to meet now and go over a few things, and then we’ll decide what we do.”
Grissom has struggled since coming off the IL in early May. He is 12-for-81 (.148 batting average) with just one double, three RBIs, six runs, five walks, and 19 strikeouts in 23 games.
