Red Sox trade versatile WooSox utilityman to the Mets
The Red Sox traded infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez to the Mets on Sunday for cash considerations, per the MiLB transactions log. He was assigned to the Mets Triple-A Syracuse affiliate, who will be in Worcester for the WooSox final home series of the season at Polar Park.
Following the trade, Alvarez was added to the Mets’ 40-man roster and promoted to the big leagues. In a corresponding move, the Mets designated former Red Sox infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.
Alvarez is coming off a red-hot performance at the plate over the weekend, where he went 3-for-5 on Saturday, belting three home runs. He matched a season high in RBI with six in the win for the WooSox.
Boston signed Alvarez in July last season, and he was immediately assigned to Triple-A Worcester. Prior to joining the Sox, Alvarez was in the Brewers system and was putting together a solid season posting .283/.397/.473 line over 257 plate appearances while playing all over the infield and both corner outfield positions.
While with the WooSox, Alvarez was a clubhouse leader and offered positional versatility in both the infield and outfield.
The Miami native played in one game for the WooSox last season before suffering a foot injury that ended his season. This year, Alvarez has hit all over the lineup, posting a .247 batting average with 18 homers, 26 doubles, one triple, 77 RBI, 48 walks, 18 stolen bases with a .348 on-base percentage, .463 slugging, and a .811 OPS over 114 games.
