Red Sox top pitching prospect placed on the Sea Dogs 7-day injured list
Red Sox top pitching prospect Luis Perales left his Portland Sea Dogs start on Saturday with right elbow inflammation, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
Portland placed the righty on their 7-day injured list on Sunday morning.
Beyond the Monster’s Josh Ball wrote on X that Perales “walked to the back of the mound, shaking his arm out, and walked to the clubhouse with a trainer.”
Perales went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and one earned run off two hits while walking one and striking out three. He threw 36 pitches and 25 strikes before being removed from the game.
Boston recently promoted Perales to Double-A; he made one start last week against Altoona. Perales allowed no earned runs, two hits, and one walk while striking out seven in five innings.
The 21-year-old was ranked as the organization’s No. 4 prospect by SoxProspects.com in their latest rankings. He is the Red Sox No. 1 pitching prospect in the system.
In total for the year, Perales has posted a 2.94 ERA and 1.93 FIP with 56 strikeouts and 12 walks across nine starts (33 2/3 innings) with the Red Sox High-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive, and the Sea Dogs. The righty also ranked first in the South Atlantic League in strikeouts, with 15.72 per nine innings, a strikeout rate of 39.7 percent, and a swinging-strikeout rate of 20.7 percent before his Double-A promotion, per FanGraphs.
If Perales’ injury results in him missing significant time, it’ll be a massive blow to his development this season.
