Red Sox to sign left-hander Matt Strahm to a one-year deal
The Boston Red Sox are in an agreement to sign left-handed reliever Matt Strahm on a one-year contract, per Fansided’s Robert Murray. The deal is expected to be worth $3 million according to Jon Heyman.
Strahm only appeared in six games last season with the Padres. The 30-year-old missed time last season due to right patellar tendon repair and right knee inflammation. Strahm pitched 6 2/3 innings yielding 15 hits, six earned runs while posting an 8.10 ERA in 2021.
The southpaw has spent six seasons in the big leagues, one with the Royals and five in San Diego. His best season came in 2018 when he posted a 2.35 ERA in 41 games. Strahm has a career 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 157 major league appearances while making 25 starts.
The addition of Strahm gives manager Alex Cora another left-hander for his bullpen. Strahm will join Josh Taylor, Darwinzon Hernandez and Austin Davis as options for the 2022 season.
The addition of Strahm is the first major move for Boston since returning from the MLB lockout. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, the Red Sox may not be done adding to their bullpen.
