Red Sox to recall Joe Jacques, will place Joely Rodriguez on the IL
The Red Sox will recall left-handed reliever Joe Jacques from Triple-A Worcester, per source. The club will place left-hander Joely Rodriguez on the injured list with a hip injury.
Rodriguez, who last pitched Tuesday against the Braves, is dealing with a sore hip, according to Alex Cora.
“He’s hurt,” said Cora. “Tight hip. He felt it (Saturday). We felt like today he was making strides, but that wasn’t the case. He’ll be going on the IL tomorrow. We don’t think it’s serious, but where we’re at right now, just making sure he’s OK. We don’t think it’s more than 15 days.”
Cora gave some clarity as to what the southpaw was dealing with to reporters on Sunday.
“He felt it (Saturday) warming up,” said Cora. “(Saturday) night, he felt better. This morning, he was moving but then he felt it again. We decided to obviously stay away from him and put him on the IL (Monday).”
Jacques returns after being optioned after Friday night’s game against the Giants. He was sent out to make room for newly acquired right-hander Mauricio Llovera.
The southpaw has pitched to a 4.86 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 14 appearances (16 2/3 innings) since his contract was selected in June.
