Red Sox to promote Ramon Vázquez to bench coach

The former big league infielder will take over for Will Venable who joined Bruce Bochy’s staff in Texas. Venable will become Bochy’s associate manager.
Boston was connected to Astros coach Alex Cintron to fill the vacant bench coach role. The Astros co-hitting coach recently signed a multi-year extension with the defending World Series champions.
The 46-year-old Vázquez has been with the Red Sox organization since 2018. He first started working as a statistical analysis coordinator and then moved into a role as a quality control coach.
Last season, Vázquez took over as the Red Sox first base coach after Tom Goodwin was fired.
The former infielder spent parts of nine seasons in the bigs. Vázquez played 27 games for the Red Sox in 2005 before he was traded to Cleveland for Alex Cora.
There has not been a formal announcement by the Red Sox but it’s expected to come within the coming days.
