Red Sox to promote left-hander Shane Drohan to Triple-A Worcester (source)
The Red Sox will promote left-handed pitching prospect Shane Drohan to Triple-A Worcester, per source.
Drohan has been dominating opposing Double-A lineups this season. He’s posted a 5-0 record with a 1.32 ERA with 36 strikeouts, and 0.82 WHIP in six starts.
The Red Sox named Drohan the organization’s starting pitcher of the month for April.
There has been hype around Drohan based off the start of his 2023 season. He will now pencil himself into the WooSox starting rotation and showcase himself at the next level.
Drohan was selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. The left-hander from Florida State has risen through the system showing off his swing-and-miss stuff.
This offseason, Drohan focused on adding strength and velocity. He gained 14 pounds by lifting and eating more during the day. The lefty came into this season weighing 190 pounds.
“Shane’s just a really good example of the player development process. You get a kid out of college who probably hadn’t pitched as much as some others. Athletic. Room to add weight. Some arm strength, some arm speed. A good pitch mix, but really hadn’t thrown a ton, or really utilized his pitch mix a good. Really, just a good foundation for someone we could really help grow and help develop and educate him on what he does well, what he can continue to improve upon, what can be done in the short term and what can be done over a gradual process,” Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham said to The Athletic in April.
The 6-foot-3 southpaw offers a four-pitch mix, featuring a fastball that sits between 92-94 mph and tops out at 96 mph. He also operates with a cutter, which he added this offseason, 83 mph changeup and 75-89 mph curveball.
Abraham thought Drohan’s changeup made the biggest jump from 2022. He learned the changeup through long toss and the newly added cutter falls between his fastball and curveball.
