Red Sox to place John Schreiber on the injured list, bullpen moves
The Red Sox bullpen is expected to see more changes over the coming days. Right-handed reliever John Schreiber is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list with a right lat tightness.
Schreiber was seen flexing his right arm after throwing a pitch to Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez in the seventh inning. He would later leave the game with manager Alex Cora and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry.
The Michigan native had reportedly been dealing with discomfort in his right lat the last few days.
“It has been tight a little bit this past week,” Schreiber said. “I was throwing some bullpens, it was coming out good. It felt like something I could get through... Tonight, it was coming out really good, I thought. That last pitch, maybe a little bit too much extension there, and it tightened up.”
Schreiber has been one to the Red Sox most productive relievers this season. He’s posted a 2.12 ERA (4 earned runs in 17 innings) in 18 games so far this season.
Boston is hopeful that Schreiber will only need 15 days on the injured list. While he’s out dealing with his injury, Cora will need others to step up and pitch high leverage situations.
Chris Martin and recently activated Joely Rodriguez will likely get the lion share of opportunities. Josh Winckowski and Kutter Crawford, who Boston will activate off the injured list on Friday are two others that’ll be relied on heavily.
The team also announced that left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Bernardino was seen hugging and shaking hands with teammates after the 10-1 blowout loss to the Mariners on Monday night.
He is the second reliever to be removed from the Red Sox 26-man roster in back-to-back days. Boston designated Ryan Brasier for assignment on Sunday night.
The team is going to add two relievers prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Mariners.
Right-handers Justin Garza and Kaleb Ort are the most logical choices. Boston could also look at Taylor Broadway who they received in the Jake Diekman trade last season.
The Texas native has pitched in 10 games for the WooSox this season, he’s posted a 1-0 record, 4.50 ERA, 17 strikeouts, 1.50 WHIP over 18 innings this season.
Broadway has been getting stretched out at times during games pitching multiple innings, giving WooSox manager Chad Tracy length in games.
Jake Faria could also earn the promotion, he’s been in a long-reliever role all season. The California native was recalled once this season, he was on the roster for the Patriot’s Day game against the Angels, but did not pitch.
