Red Sox to place Jarren Duran on the IL, recall WooSox outfielder
The Red Sox will announce that outfielder Jarren Duran will be placed on the injured list with a left toe injury, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.
Duran was injured during Sunday afternoon’s game against the Yankees after he crashed into the wall during the sixth inning attempting to rob a homer from Gleyber Torres.
The loss of Duran will impact the Sox’ lineup as they try and capture the final wild-card spot in the American League.
Duran is tied for fourth in the bigs with 34 doubles and he is 24-for-26 in stolen base attempts. His speed has transformed the Red Sox lineup with having speed at the top of the lineup.
“He’s sore,” Alex Cora said after Sunday’s game about Duran’s injury. “You saw him in the last at-bat. I noticed it on TV. He felt it right away. He thought he could play through it but I think we were very smart taking him out of the game at that point.”
Over the last five games, Duran is 4-for-16 with one double, one walk, one stole base and four strikeouts with a .313 slugging percentage.
Recently, Duran has posted content on his social media to indicate he was struggling with his mental health.
“We are aware of it and we talked to the player. We’ll keep it private,” Alex Cora said during the Nationals series. “I think he took a huge step last year when he opened up [in an interview late last year] about his situation, how he felt. … I saw the [recent social media] message, but we’ll keep it private and we’ll keep talking to the player and he’ll be ready to play.”
Duran is enjoying a great season batting .295 with a .346 on-base percentage, .482 slugging percentage and .828 OPS in 102 games.
The Red Sox will recall outfielder Wilyer Abreu from Triple-A Worcester to replace Duran on the 26-man roster.
Abreu has been tearing the cover off the ball the last month for Triple-A Worcester. He is batting .424, 25-for-59 with a .528 on-base percentage, .949 slugging percentage, 1.477 OPS, nine homers, four doubles, 25 RBI, and three steals in 17 games this month.
