Red Sox to option Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester (report)
Red Sox will option infielder Bobby Dalbec back to Triple-A Worcester, according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford.
Dalbec heading back to the WooSox will allow the club to make room for second baseman Vaughn Grissom, who is being activated off the injured list. Grissom will join the team to begin their road trip in Minnesota on Friday. His start to the season was delayed due to having the flu the last couple of days.
The move to option Dalbec should come as a surprise after the Red Sox added depth to the roster over the last week. With the additions of veterans Dominic Smith and Garrett Cooper, Dalbec became expendable.
Initially, the plan was for Dalbec to get the majority of starts at first base with Triston Casas on the IL after he tore cartilage in his rib cage. Unfortunately, Dalbec scuffled at the plate, hitting just .132 (7-for-53) with no homers, four RBI, and two stolen bases while posting a .377 OPS.
Dalbec was a steady defensive player while with the Red Sox but offered nothing with his bat. The 28-year-old went 0-for-3 (with a walk and two strikeouts) in the series finale against the Giants at Fenway Park on Thursday.
The Washington native is in the last year in which he can be optioned by the Red Sox. He was optioned by Boston on April 8 and played in two games with the WooSox before being recalled back to the Red Sox.
