Red Sox to call up Zack Kelly and Kaleb Ort from Triple-A Worcester
It’s been a busy Sunday night for the Red Sox front office. Following the Red Sox loss to the Rays earlier in the day, the club has jettisoned left-handed hurler Austin Davis and right Hirokazu Sawamura. Both relievers were designated for assignment.
The Red Sox are now expected to fill their roster spots with Zack Kelly and Kaleb Ort, per Ed Hand of SoxProspects, Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham and The Athletics Chad Jennings.
Kelly will be added to the 40-man roster and will join the club in Minnesota. As Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects reported earlier on Sunday, Kelly and his wife are expecting their first child at anytime. It will be a busy and exciting week for the 27-year-old righty.
This season Kelly has pitched very well posting a 6-3 record with an 2.72 ERA in 49 2/3 innings of work. The undrafted free-agent will now see his dreams come to a reality with the Red Sox this week.
Kelly’s pitching arsenal includes a fastball and changeup that can each be above average at times. He also features a a cutter as well.
Ort is back with the Red Sox having thrown 15 innings this year with an ERA of 9.00.
