Red Sox to call up left-hander Chris Murphy from Triple-A Worcester
Boston promotes the southpaw on his 25th birthday.
The Red Sox are calling up lefty Chris Murphy for their upcoming three-game set in Cleveland starting Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported Monday night. Murphy turned 25 today (Monday) on Worcester’s off-day.
Who Boston sends down isn’t known yet, but Murphy will be placed on the 26-man roster by tomorrow and will be available out of the bullpen. Cotillo also noted that the Sox need a starter Thursday — this could mean Murphy gets the nod there, though they’ll see how things play out before making a decision on who starts then.
Murphy is the 20th-ranked prospect on SoxProspects.com, as he’s dropped a bit recently — he’s struggled in Triple-A Worcester this season, authoring an 8.35 ERA in nine starts for the WooSox before making a move to the bullpen, where he hurled three scoreless innings Thursday in Louisville.
Barring Brennan Bernandino being the one sent down, the 2019 sixth-round pick in Murphy will be the third lefty on Boston’s roster along with James Paxton.
Murphy’s fastball clocks in at 92.2 mph while he compliments it with a curveball, slider, and changeup.
