Red Sox targeting Jud Fabian again in the MLB Draft?
The Red Sox selected Fabian in the second-round of the 2021 MLB Draft
Last season the Red Sox failed to sign second-round draft pick Jud Fabian. The slot value for the No. 40 pick was $1.86 million but Fabian felt that was too low for him to sign with Boston. There was rumors that teams picking behind the Red Sox were willing to pay the Florida outfielder over $3 million.
Unfortunately, Boston could not sign Fabian to that figure because it would have resulted in them losing their first-round pick in this year’s MLB Draft.
As a result for not signing Fabian, Boston will receive a compensatory pick, No. 41 overall in this year’s Draft.
The Red Sox will select No. 24 overall in the first round and according to a mock draft by Sportsnaut, it has chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom selecting Fabian again this year.
Fabian was originally projected to be a first rounder last season, however he slid into the second round. At one point, MLB.com’s Jim Callis had Fabian as an option for the No. 4 overall pick. The Red Sox ultimately decided on shortstop Marcelo Mayer.
This season with the Florida Gators, Fabian is hitting .259 with 19 home runs, 47 RBIs, seven doubles, one triple with 44 hits in 170 at-bats.
Fabian owns a three home run game this season for the Gators. If he is drafted again by the Red Sox, he will bring a power bat to the organization. The Gators outfielder might be one of the better bats in the draft. The term “tools” has been used in almost every scouting report for Fabian. He doesn’t entirely excel in one particular area, he offers a complete balanced skill set.
He projects to show power at the next level. The caveat to that is he will strike out his fair share, but that also goes hand-in-hand for players with an impact bat.
