Red Sox struggled in the month of July, turning the page to the trade deadline and the month of August
The Boston Red Sox went 0-6-2 in July after a hot June
Red Sox fans, we can finally turn the calendar to the month of August. After what looked to be a promising turnaround in June for this team after going 10-19 to start the season, the Red Sox are back to first-month form.
The headline of the July is clearly the injury bug. This month the Sox lost Rafael Devers, Chris Sale, J.D. Martinez, Trevor Story, and others for some period of time.
Due to those injuries, the Sox have also failed to put a consistent starting rotation out on the field day in and day out. The Red Sox started nine different pitchers in the month of July holding the worse ERA of any team during the month. It also took them until the last day of the month to have a starting pitcher win a game.
Pitching was a huge problem with all the young talent and rookies being thrown into the mix. To make matters worse a couple of those starts came against divisional teams who could make a run come October.
With three of the five starters from the Opening Day rotation out and Nathan Eovaldi missing time it left Nick Pivetta to be the Sox ace. Pivetta struggled last month with a 9.00 ERA and wasn’t the same starter we saw in June.
Now lets jump to the offensive side, the bats for the Sox have gone cold. The once known as “explosive offense,” they averaged two runs putting a massive strain on the pitching staff.
Needless to say whether you want to blame injuries, Chaim Bloom’s lack of urgency to find another piece or even Sydney Sweeney’s appearance at Fenway Park, this club must act fast. The trade deadline is rapidly approaching and only time will tell the direction this team is heading for and the confidence the front office will have for the team.
