Monday was a crazy day for the Red Sox as they shipped off their veteran catcher Christian Vázquez to the Astros for two minor leaguers in return.
Those two prospects were ranked inside the Astros Top 30 are Enmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu.
They then made a deal where they acquired Tommy Pham from the Reds in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The Sox then made a move acquiring catcher Reese McGuire from the White Sox in exchange for lefty reliever Jake Diekman.
A source close with Beyond the Monster stated that the Red Sox were not done being buyers-or-sellers and were showing interest in Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy.
Alex Speier of the Boston Globe stated that the asking price for Murphy was “huge” and stated in the article that the Sox probably would not land Murphy as the Red Sox are not willing to part ways with any of their top five prospects — two being specifically named — Tristan Casas and Brayan Bello.
A source close to Beyond the Monster later confirmed that the Red Sox likely would not be buying-in on A’s catcher Murphy.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, a report by Jon Morosi on MLB Network stated that the Red Sox could look at a controllable infielder prior to the MLB trade deadline and he mentioned Angels infielder Luis Rengifo as a possibility for the Red Sox.
With all of that being said Nathan Eovaldi is still available along with JD Martinez.
Martinez knows his days are numbered and could be ending before the 6 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.
“I’m not blind. I know what’s going on, being out there. But just put it off to the side. As far as I know I’m here. I’m not going to think anything otherwise. I want to make it as hard on [chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom to make a trade] as I can,” Martinez said on Sunday.
As reports have stated if Martinez is dealt by the Sox, they likely wouldn’t get an overhaul of prospects in return as they are looking for major leaguers in exchange for the 34-year-old soon-to-be-free-agent.
Eovaldi was made available by the Red Sox prior to the deadline and he, like Martinez, knows the clock is possibly ticking.
“I understand my name’s coming around,” said Eovaldi. “My job is to go out there and perform whether it’s the Red Sox or not, whether interested teams are watching or not. I’m not thinking about going out there and trying to do better or anything else. It’s just, go out, focus on mechanics and executing pitches.”
With the deadline right around the corner fully expect things to heat up on the Sox end pretty soon.
