Red Sox southpaw's impress on Friday night tossing scoreless frames in comeback win
In just his third career big league appearance, Red Sox left-hander Bailey Horn played a key and pivotal role in Boston’s 5-3 comeback win over the Yankees on Friday night.
Horn tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out three, including slugger Aaron Judge. The southpaw came in relief of Tanner Houck, who only lasted 3 1/3 innings, and gave Alex Cora some much-needed innings before turning it over to fellow lefty Cam Booser, who tossed two scoreless innings of his own.
Horn’s big league debut came on June 29 against the Padres, and he gave up four hits and two runs, including a homer with two walks. Since his debut, he’s gone four scoreless innings, issuing three hits and no runs with four strikeouts.
Boston acquired Horn from the White Sox at the end of May, and he quickly became one of Chad Tracy’s key relievers in his bullpen for the WooSox.
“There has been a lot of focused work in the bullpen for him centered around getting the ball over the plate,” said Tracy in mid-May. “He had a lot of walks in Charlotte and had too many deep counts. The focus was about getting his stuff in and around the zone as much as possible.”
Booser was equally as good following being recalled from Triple-A Worcester Friday morning. The lefty replaced right-handed reliever Chris Martin, who went on the injured list with right elbow inflammation. The 32-year-old tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth inning in his first action in the bigs since June 23.
Horn and Booser didn’t pitch in the Red Sox 14-4 loss to the Yankees on Saturday and will be relatively rested ahead of the series finale on Sunday night.
