Red Sox sign versatile veteran infielder to minor league deal
The Red Sox are adding a versatile veteran infielder to the mix this spring. Boston is signing Abraham Toro to a minor-league deal, per Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase. The deal also includes an invitation to spring training.
The 28-year-old spent last season with the Athletics before he was outrighted to Triple-A in late August. While with the Athletics, Toro played in 94 games, hitting .240 with six homers, 17 doubles, one triple, and four stolen bases while posting a .643 OPS. He was exceptionally good for the A’s during the first two months of last season, owning a 120 wRC+.
Things quickly unraveled for Toro offensively, hitting .160 by June and then a left hamstring injury dashed any hopes the Athletics had of trying to flip him at the deadline.
Toro has not produced at the big league level, slashing .220/.285/.353 while the career switch-hitter owns a career. He maintained a batting line of 305/.396/.486 during portions of five Triple-A seasons.
The native of Canada has mostly played third base (161 games) and second base (133 games) in the big leagues while seeing innings at first base (15 games) and the outfield (one game in each corner spot). In 2024, he played 56 games at third for the A’s and saw 19 appearances at second base, five at first base and one game in left field.
Toro offers the Red Sox additional depth in the infield at the upper level of the system. With Kristian Campbell and Vaughn Grissom likely ending up on the 26-man Opening Day roster, the veteran Toro can anchor down different spots of the WooSox infield. Toto will also join non-roster invitee Nate Eaton at Triple-A Worcester next season with Nick Sogard, Marcelo Mayer, and Alex Binelas as other infield options.
