Red Sox sign reliever Chris Martin, agrees to 2-year pact
The Red Sox are adding to their bullpen by agreeing to a two-year, $17.5 million deal with free agent Chris Martin. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
“Right-handed reliever Chris Martin and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a two-year, $17.5 million contract, pending physical, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Martin, 36, was magnificent for the Dodgers after a deadline trade and parlayed it into a multiyear deal,” Passan tweeted.
The 36-year-old split time between the Cubs and Dodgers last season. Martin finished the season 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA and a 0.982 WHIP with 74 strikeouts in 56 innings between the two clubs.
The Texas native joins new lefty Joely Rodriguez who the club signed before Thanksgiving. Boston is attempting to improve their bullpen this offseason. Martin and Rodriguez will join John Schreiber, Matt Barnes, Tanner Houck with others that will be in the mix.
Martin is no stranger to the Red Sox organization, the 6-foot-8 righty joined signed in 2011. He elevated through the system in 2011 and was with Triple-A Pawtucket before being traded to the Rockies along with Franklin Morales for infielder Jonathan Herrera.
