Red Sox sign outfielder Greg Allen to minors deal
The Red Sox added some outfield depth on Wednesday night by finalizing a minor league deal with Greg Allen, per ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. If Allen reaches the majors, he will earn $1.4 million in salary, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
The 29-year-old will also receive an invite to spring training and will have the opportunity to compete for a bench job and make the Red Sox Opening Day roster.
Allen spent the majority of last season with the Pirates, he slashed .186/.260/.721 with four doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs, 17 runs scored, eight stolen bases, 10 walks, and 42 strikeouts over 46 games. He was designated for assignment in late September and then elected free agency in October.
The speedy outfielder is a former sixth-round draft pick of the Guardians. He played four seasons with Cleveland, appearing in a total of 220 games with a slash line of 239/.295/.344 with eight homers, 57 RBIs, 76 runs scored, and 31 stolen bases.

The California native was involved in the 2020 Mike Clevinger deal that sent him to the Padres. He has also spent time with the Yankees prior to landing with the Pirates.
Allen will provide the Red Sox with outfield depth at the upper levels of the system next season. He will provide experience for Triple-A Worcester if he is unable to secure a spot on the Red Sox bench. Allen is out of minor-league options, which will make it difficult to send him up and down this coming season. He is the seventh player the Red Sox have invited to big league camp in March.
