Red Sox sign left-handed pitcher Thomas Pannone to a minor league deal
The Red Sox made one small move on Friday adding left-handed hurler Thomas Pannone to a minor-league deal. Following the signing, the Red Sox assigned him to Triple-A Worcester.
Pannone, a Rhode Island native pitched for the Los Angeles Angels Triple-A affiliate last season.
He made 24 appearances for the Salt Lake Bees last season. Pannone posted a 7.07 ERA with 82 strikeouts and 40 walks over 118 1/3 total innings of work.
The 27-year-old was a former ninth-round selection of the Guardians out of the College of Southern Nevada in 2013. Pannone would spend four years in the Guardians system before being dealt to the Blue Jays. The lefty was involved in a three-player deal that sent reliever Joe Smith to Cleveland.
He pitched in the major leagues for the Blue Jays both in 2018 and ‘19. He went 7-7 with a 5.43 ERA, 1.35 WHIP over 49 games. That included 13 starts in two seasons combined.
The Bishop Hendricken High graduate provides depth in Triple-A for next season. It’s not known yet whether Pannone was given an invite to Spring Training. If he does head to Fort Myers, he would be the 12th minor league free agent they’ve signed to get an invite.
