Red Sox sign former A’s reliever to minor league deal (report)
The Red Sox added more bullpen depth on Sunday afternoon, agreeing to a minor league deal with right-handed pitcher Austin Adams, according to KPRC2’s Ari Alexander.
Adams’ deal includes an invite to spring training and could be worth $1.5 million with appearance bonuses next season.
The 33-year-old spent last season with the Athletics, posting a 3.92 ERA with a 4.47 FIP, a 1.476 WHIP, and 53 strikeouts to 23 walks in 41 1/3 innings (56 games). Adams owns a career 4.10 ERA in his eight-year career. In addition to pitching for the Athletics, he’s also played for the Mariners, Padres, and Diamondbacks.
Adams relies on a three-pitch arsenal while on the mound, utilizing a slider, four-seam fastball, and sinker. He threw his slider 73.8% of the time last season, holding opponents to a .246 batting average and striking out 52 batters, according to Baseball Savant.
Boston has now added two right-handed pitchers on minor league deals over the last couple of days as chief baseball officer Craig Breslow builds out his bullpen pitching depth. The Red Sox signed former Rockies right-handed pitcher Noah Davis to a minor league contract.
Davis, 27, pitched in nine games for the Rockies last season, posting a 5.75 ERA with 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 20 1/3 innings. He’s pitched in parts of three big league seasons, all with Colorado, going 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA, striking out 43 batters to 23 walks over 51 1/3 innings.
Both Adams and Davis will join fellow right-handed hurlers Isaiah Campbell, Michael Fulmer, Bryan Mata, and Wyatt Mills, who have invites to spring training.
