With the MLB Winter Meetings underway, the Red Sox’s checklist includes adding to the rotation. While there are plenty of options on the free agent market, the Red Sox have shown interest in Seth Lugo, according to Jon Heyman. The former 34th-round pick is coming off a productive 2023 campaign and would provide a veteran presence to the rotation.
In 26 starts during the 2023 season, Lugo posted a 3.57 ERA and struck out 140 batters. While the veteran righthander only recorded eight wins, he worked exclusively out of the rotation for the first time in his career. On a Padres team that failed to meet expectations, Lugo was a bright spot.
Additionally, Lugo is a unique arm because he has played various roles. In his career, the Louisiana native has made 301 appearances, 64 of which have been as a starter. He also has 16 career saves. Over the last three years, Lugo has been a model of consistency, as he hasn’t posted an ERA above 3.60 since the 2020 season.
While Lugo isn’t the top option on the board, the Red Sox will have competition for his services. The former Padre has also reportedly drawn interest from the Reds, Braves and Diamondbacks, according to Heyman.
As Lugo enters his age 34 campaign, he is reportedly looking for a three-year deal. He would be a solid addition with his career 3.50 ERA. He also knows what pitching in a demanding market like Boston is like. Lugo spent the first seven years of his career pitching in New York for the Mets.
With the Red Sox needing multiple arms, Lugo is one free agent to keep an eye on.
