Red Sox showing interest in 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner
Over the last few weeks, the Boston Red Sox have made it clear that upgrading the rotation is a priority. They have been connected to some of the top options in the trade market and free agency, such as Garrett Crochet, Blake Snell, and Max Fried. On Monday, a new name joined the mix in Shane Bieber.
According to MLB Insider Robert Murray, the Red Sox have had discussions with Bieber’s representatives. The former fourth-round pick is not expected to be ready for Opening Day after undergoing Tommy John Surgery in April. While Bieber won’t be ready to start the season he could be an impactful arm once he is healthy.
Since making his MLB debut in 2018, Bieber has appeared in 136 games and posted a 3.22 ERA. In 843 innings, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner has struck out 958 batter and held opponents to .227 batting average. He has been the leader of the Guardians rotation and one of the best pitchers in the American League.
While his 2024 campaign was cut short, Bieber was stellar in a small sample size. He did not allow an earned run in 12 innings and struck out 20 batters. Those are the type of elite numbers that fans in Cleveland have become accustomed to and would be welcomed in Boston. With the Red Sox in need of an ace, Bieber could fill that role.
Due to his injury, Bieber may not require a huge contract. When discussing what a deal may look like, Murray said, “A two-year deal would probably make the most sense for a guy like Beiber. He is going to end up having a pretty strong market. I could see the Red Sox being in play there as well. I think they have had some contact with Bieber’s representation.”
As the Red Sox continue their quest to improve their rotation, Bieber will be a name to watch. He has been one of the best pitchers in the game over the last few years, and when healthy, he would be a huge upgrade.
Beiber is expected to return to action in June 2025, just in time to get back into form before a playoff push.
