Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story to have shoulder surgery, expected to miss rest of the regular season
The Red Sox learned the fate of shortstop Trevor Story following his shoulder injury in Anaheim last weekend.
Story has a fractured glenoid bone in his left shoulder and will undergo surgery that is expected to be season-ending, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Tuesday to reporters.
The Texas native will see orthopedist Dr. Neal El Attrache and undergo surgery on Friday in Los Angeles.
The athletic shortstop was injured on Friday during the fourth inning while attempting to make a diving play on a Mike Trout grounder. He was placed on the 10-day injured list the following day after an MRI revealed he had a left shoulder subluxation.
Additional testing revealed that Story would require surgery to address the injury and Breslow did not rule out the possibility of labrum damage in his shoulder.
“After speaking with our medical staff further, confirmation on a second opinion, and Trevor’s decision to go forward, we had talked about some concern over his bony structure,” Breslow said. “He’s got a fracture of the glenoid rim, so he’ll have surgery on Friday to fix that.
“What we’re looking at is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of six months. It’s difficult to speculate specifically beyond that, but you can do the math there.”
Story’s injury is the latest blow to the Red Sox roster, which has already lost starter Lucas Giolito for the season after he underwent elbow surgery. Nick Pivetta was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday afternoon with a flexor strain in his elbow, though Breslow described that injury as “mild.”
Boston will turn to internal options at shortstop with Story on the shelf. The Red Sox plan to platoon David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez at shortstop. Enmanuel Valdez and Pablo Reyes will offer a platoon at second base for now.
Breslow told reporters the team will go with the internal approach for now but will continue to monitor the waiver wire and trade markets for additional depth.
“Right now, we’re committed to giving our internal options a chance,” he said. “It works out really well in terms of having right-handed and left-handed platoon options at both middle infield positions.”
Vaughn Grissom will begin a rehab stint on Friday and will see innings at shortstop. The Red Sox may utilize center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela at the position, but Breslow believes it would be hard to move him off the position at the moment.
“I think it’s important for us to continue on the development path that we believe was best for him and for this organization,” Breslow said. “That’s very likely with him at second base. He’ll certainly get reps throughout the rehab process at shortstop, and we’ll make a determination.”
