Red Sox select high school outfielder Roman Anthony with the No. 79 selection
The Red Sox concluded night one for the MLB draft with selecting high school power-hitting outfielder Roman Anthony at No. 79 overall.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Floridian hits left-handed, throws righty and is committed to Ole Miss next season.
Red Sox scout Paul Toboni thought Anthony presented tremendous value for the Red Sox at No. 79 overall.
“He’s a tremendous athlete. We think he’s got a really good shot of sticking in center field,” Toboni said. “He’s got this profile where he’s going to get on base. He sees the ball well. He’s got tremendous power potential. That’s a pretty rare combination to find for a center fielder.”
Last year, Anthony hit a moonshot 450-foot homer at Coors Field during a high school showcase.

What makes that home run even more impressive was that Anthony hit that with a wooden bat and not aluminum.
Anthony hit a whopping .520 in 2022 with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. He was named the Gatorade Florida Player of the Year.
His draft slot is set at $820,000, it’ll be interesting whether the Red Sox will sign this young power hitting lefty.
