BOSTON– The Red Sox have selected the contract of Dinelson Lamet from Triple-A Worcester on Monday afternoon. The corresponding move is designating left-handed reliever Richard Bleier for assignment. This move makes sense for a Red Sox team in dire need of pitchers. They are fielding out openers in two of the five rotation spots.
Lamet has pitched in 16 games for the Colorado Rockies before signing a minor league deal with the Red Sox in late June. He posted an ERA of 11.57 in just 25.2 innings pitched. In AAA Worcester this season, Lamet has pitched in just five games and posted an ERA of 3.72 in 19.1 innings pitched.
Bleier was traded to the Red Sox in the trade that sent RHP Matt Barnes to the Marlins on January 30th of this year. Bleier has posted an ERA of 5.28 in 27 games out of the bullpen. He was the lone left-handed relief pitcher who made the opening day roster for the Sox. Bleier ended up on the IL on May 23rd with left-shoulder inflammation. He made just eight appearances after returning on July 18th. Bleier struggled against left-handed batters and had reverse splits.
