Red Sox reliever undergoes Tommy John surgery, will miss the remainder of the season
Red Sox right-hander Wyatt Mills underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, he will miss the rest of the regular season.
The 28-year-old sidearmer looked strong during spring training until he was shut down due to a flexor injury. Mills was placed on the 15-day IL prior to the start of the season but was later moved to the 60-day IL on April 16.
The team announced Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery at Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington, Texas.
The Sox acquired Mills from the Royals for minor league righty Jacob Wallace on Dec. 16. He only appeared in five spring training games before he was shut down with the arm injury.
Mills was designated for assignment by the Royals on Tuesday after the team announced the signing of free agent pitcher Ryan Yarbrough.
The 27-year-old righty joined the Royals organization last summer after being from the Mariners as part of the Carlos Santana trade.
Last season, Mills made 19 MLB appearances in Kansas City, working to a 4.79 ERA across 20 2/3 innings. Mills struck out 39.7% of the batters he faced in 13 outings for the Royals Triple-A affiliate. The former Gonzaga product has struggled with his control, he walked more than 17% of opponents he faced.
