Red Sox reliever Joely Rodriguez exits spring training game with side injury
Red Sox left-handed reliever Joely Rodríguez left Saturday’s Grapefruit League exhibition game against the Orioles with a right side injury. The team has described his injury as “right torso pain,” per MLB.com’s Ian Browne.
During the eight inning, Rodríguez threw a pitch and immediately grabbed his side. The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham reported that the Sox lefty was “was groaning in pain as he went to the clubhouse and was holding onto his side.”
The Red Sox have been slowly working Rodríguez back to action, the southpaw had shoulder surgery during the offseason.
If Rodríguez was to miss anytime, Boston has left-handed in-house candidates who could crack the 26-man roster. Non-roster invitees Ryan Sherriff, Oddanier Mosqueda and Matt Dermody have all been demoted to minor league camp, all could be an option for Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
“We’ll know [Sunday] how he comes back and then probably do some imaging to see where we’re at,” Cora said.
Last season, the southpaw reliever had a 4.47 ERA (3.23 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and career-high 57 strikeouts in 50 1/3 relief innings over 55 appearances in 2022 for the New York Mets.
The Red Sox signed former Mets lefty to a one-year deal with a club option for 2024 in November. In 2023, Rodriguez will make $1.5 million, with another $2 million possible.
