Red Sox reliever Chris Martin expected to rejoin the club this weekend
The Red Sox have been without an important member of their bullpen. Right-handed reliever Chris Martin has been on the injured list and is inching closer to returning to the club.
Martin has been on the injured list since April 16 when he was added with right shoulder inflammation.
The 36-year-old was expected to make a rehab appearance for the WooSox on Thursday, but he was sick earlier in the week and wasn’t able to pitch.
WooSox manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Thursday night that Martin is expected to pitch an inning on Friday night. He will throw roughly 15-20 pitches during his outing.
Martin is expected to be activated from the injured list on Sunday.
“He got sick during the week, that’s why we had to push him back,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Friday. “But I saw him yesterday, he feels good and so he’s ready to go today. And hopefully, everything goes well, he feels fine and we’ll give him one day and be back on Sunday.”
The veteran righty has allowed two runs in 7 innings (2.57 ERA) over seven relief outings for Boston this year. He has two strikeouts and one walk.
