The Red Sox released left-handed reliever Richard Bleier on Wednesday. The moves comes on the heels of Bleier being designated for assignment on Monday.
Boston acquired Bleier from the Marlins for Matt Barnes back in January.
The 36-year-old was hit hard during his short-stint with the Red Sox. Bleier appeared in 27 games for the Sox, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.28 ERA, 16 strikeouts and a 1.370 WHIP.
“It just didn’t work out, I guess,” said Alex Cora on Bleier to reporters on Wednesday. “Lately, it’s been bad luck — a lot of ground balls getting through (the infield). He was banged up, he was hurt. One of those were, he did what he always does - throw strikes. It just didn’t happen here.”
The lefty spent time on the injured list with an inflamed left shoulder, making four rehab appearances split between both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He recorded five strikeouts over 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
Bleier is now free to sign with any team, with Boston still on the hook for roughly $1.1 million for the remainder of the season.
With the subtraction of Bleier, the Red Sox now have Brennan Bernardino, Chris Murphy, Brandon Walter as left-handed options in the bullpen.
