Red Sox reinstates infielder Pablo Reyes off the IL, option 2 relievers, other decisions looming
The Red Sox have activated infielder Pablo Reyes off the injured list on Monday. To make room for him ob the roster, the Sox optioned left-hander Brandon Walter and right-hander Justin Garza to Triple-A Worcester.
Reyes has missed over a month with an abdomen injury he suffered back in Minnesota. The 29-year-old has been impressive since being acquired from the Athletics. He’s hitting .303 (20-for-66) in 27 games.
While rehabbing, Reyes went 11-for-41 with three home runs with seven RBI, eight runs scored and stole three bases.
The Red Sox will need to make another roster move in the coming days. Reliever John Schrieber is expected to be activated on Tuesday prior to the start of the two-game series against he Braves.
Boston will need to activate Brayan Bello off the Paternity List this week, prompting the club to make another roster move.
Christian Arroyo is dealing with a jammed thumb that he suffered while the team was in Oakland. The Sox could place him on the IL delaying a roster decision regarding the logjam of middle infielders.
Kiké Hernández, Yu Chang, Arroyo and Reyes could all be a roster casualty in the next 24-48 hours.
There’s been trade chatter surrounding Hernández over the last couple of days. The Dodgers are expected to pursue a right-handed hitter and Hernández’s name has come up as a possibility.
“Los Angeles also would consider a reunion with Enrique Hernández, a league source said, if he is willing to fit into the kind of niche role the Dodgers are seeking to fill,” The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya wrote on Sunday. “Hernández, who wants to be an everyday player, has spent the past three seasons in Boston but could be the odd man out this weekend in the Red Sox’s pending roster crunch.”
