Red Sox recall Chris Murphy, option Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox are swapping out one rookie left-hander for another ahead of the three-game series against the White Sox this weekend.
Boston optioned Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester after he made his major league debut against the Twins. Chris Murphy will replace Walter on the roster and meet the team at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday.
Walter pitched in relief for Sox opener Justin Garza, who struggled in one inning giving up four hits and surrendering three runs.
The southpaw pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while recording two strikeouts. Walter gave the Red Sox length over his appearance allowing Alex Cora to save his bullpen for the weekend series in the Windy City.
Murphy will join the Red Sox for the third time this season, he has pitched in two games and has struck out eight batters in six innings.
Murphy made his major league debut in Cleveland on June 7, he tossed 3 โ scoreless innings, striking out five. If Murphy continues to pitch like he has for both the Sox and WooSox, he is going to make it really difficult on Chaim Bloom to not return him back to Worcester.
He was returned back to Worcester following Game 1 as per the rules of the doubleheader.
The roster moves on Friday are a direction reflection of the loss of Tanner Houck in the rotation. Houck will have surgery next week where a plate put into his fractured face.
Boston has four regular starters in Garrett Whitlock, Brayan Bello, James Paxton and Kutter Crawford. Ort was used as an opener for the first game of the doubleheader versus the Yankees and Garza on Thursday. Murphy could get a look as an opener and eat innings next week against the Marlins from Fenway Park.
