Red Sox recall Bobby Dalbec, place Pablo Reyes on 10-day IL
Bobby Dalbec has earned himself another shot at the big-league level.
The Red Sox called up the righty slugger from Triple-A Worcester after a stint in which he was one of the best hitters in the MiLB. In 196 at-bats, Dalbec slashed .296/.414/1.052 with 18 homers and 42 RBI. In a retroactive move, the Red Sox placed utility infielder Pablo Reyes on the 10-day IL with abdominal pain.
Dalbec put together a similarly productive minor league stint when he posted a .865 OPS with the WooSox in 2022. However, this consistent success in the upper minors hasn’t translated to the major league level, as he owns just a 79 wRC+ since the start of last season. His strikeout rates remain alarmingly high in both Triple-A and the Majors, and his defense grades out as below average.
This IL stint serves as a tough break for Reyes, has served as a solid depth piece after being acquired from Oakland on May 12th. In 27 games, Reyes has put up a 91 wRC+ while batting at a .303 clip. The 29-year-old journeyman has raked against lefties, posting a 167 wRC+ against southpaws in 25 at-bats. He’s also been excellent defensively, posting three DRS at second base and shortstop in limited innings.
While trading for Reyes certainly wasn’t one of Chaim Bloom’s sexiest acquisitions, he’s been an important piece of the Red Sox middle infield puzzle as they continue to deal with injuries to Trevor Story and Yu Chang. Dalbec won’t provide the same defensive boost that Reyes did but could potentially offer some thump against lefties off the bench.
