Red Sox re-sign two pitchers after non-tendering them
The Red Sox are bringing right-handed pitchers Bryan Mata and Isaiah Campbell after being designated for assignment earlier this week and then becoming free agents.
Both players were cut off the 40-man roster on Tuesday to make room for both Hunter Dobbins and Jhostynxon García in order to protect them both from the Rule 5 draft in December.
The two righties will get an invite to major league spring training in February and will get a shot to make the 26-man roster and add depth to the bullpen.
Mata, a former top pitching prospect in the Red Sox system, spent four years on the 40-man roster and never made his big league debut. He had an opportunity heading into spring training last season, but injuries nagged him, resulting in spending time on the injured list and making three separate rehab stints split between different levels of the Sox’ system.
Over the last two seasons, Mata has only hurled 49 2/3 innings, including 22 2/3 innings last season and recording a 4.37 ERA.
Campbell, 27, had a strong spring after he was acquired from the Mariners in the offseason for infielder Luis Urías. He also spent most of the season battling injuries, including elbow inflammation.
He recorded a 2.08 ERA to begin the season and then had back-to-back horrendous appearances against the Orioles and then landed on the injured list on April 12 with a right shoulder impingement.
Campbell made one more appearance for the Red Sox before missing more time with injuries and spending time in the minors. He tossed 16 1/3 innings for the WooSox and posted a 2.20 ERA. In total, he posted a 16.20 ERA in 6 ⅔ big league frames.
