Red Sox re-sign outfielder Johan Mieses to a minor-league deal
The Red Sox have re-signed outfielder Johan Mieses to a minor-league deal, per SoxProspects.com. The 26-year-old corner outfielder will return to the Red Sox system after splitting time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester.
Last season, the Dominican born Mieses hit .233 with 19 home runs and drove in 48 RBIs. He slashed .323/.484/.807 to go along with 12 doubles, a triple, 66 hits and scoring 47 runs.
Back in June, the powerful Mieses hit a memorable home run for the WooSox. In a game against the Red Wings, Mieses crushed a home run off starter Rogelio Armenteros. His home run was a tape measure shot that landed 435 feet and hit the railroad embankment behind the top level.
Throughout the course of his professional career, the powerful Mieses has shown the ability to hit the long ball. Mieses has hit 128 career home runs in the minor leagues.
“It’s real power. The homers are legit,” Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham told The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. “His ability to drive the baseball and overall production at the plate has been consistent all season for Portland in the middle of their lineup. We felt now was a good opportunity to challenge him at the next level.”
Mieses originally signed a minor-league deal with Boston back in November 2019 after spending the first seven years in the Dodgers and Cardinals organizations. He would miss the 2020 season due to the cancellation of the minor-league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The re-signing of Mieses provides Boston depth at the outfield position in the upper-levels of the minors. Despite only hitting .233 for the season, Mieses hit well at the Double-A level. However, the Red Sox will look for the power-hitting outfielder to bring that same consistency to Triple-A Worcester in 2022.
