Red Sox purchased the contract of right-hander Joe Jones
The Red Sox have purchased the contract of right-hander Joe Jones from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the independent American Association, the team announced.
Jones posted a 3.72 ERA with 66 strikeouts to 44 walks in 43 relief appearances 55 2/3 innings last season.
The 27-year-old went undrafted out of Division III Maryville College in 2017. He made several stops in indy ball and spent 2021 in the Diamondbacks system. Jones was eventually released by Arizona in August that season.
The Red Sox new minor league hurler will turn 28 in July. He features throws from a three-quarters arm slot and features a four-pitch mix that consists of a four-seam fastball that can top out in the high-90s, a sinker, a slider, and a newly-implemented changeup in his pitching arsenal.
“When he’s attacking the zone with that heavy sinker in the mid-90s, it just makes for an uncomfortable at-bat for any hitter in the league,” said RedHawks bench coach Anthony Renz to Eric Peterson of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead.
It’s unknown what level the Red Sox will assign Jones to just yet.
