Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an update on starter James Paxton’s hamstring injury. Paxton was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.
“It’s a strain. We’ll know how he’s reacting. If we need imaging, we’ll do it. Right now, we don’t feel that way. He’s going to fall behind a little bit here. But worst case scenario, you know, it's actually a best case scenario. It doesn't look that bad,” said Cora.
Paxton was removed from Friday’s start against the Twins after he was noticeably trying to stretch his right leg.
The left-hander told reporters after his start that he felt a tweak in his right hamstring on the second to last pitch he threw before coming out.
“Yeah, just a little kind of like hamstring grabbed at me a little bit. Just as I kind of started to find that firing pin, let the ball go a little bit harder. I wanted to step on it a little bit and hamstring just grabbed… we’ll see what we got, we don’t really know yet. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow and go from there,” said Paxton.
The Red Sox are likely going to place Paxton on the injured list to allow him time to get ramped back up for big league action.
