During the 2023 campaign, Red Sox prospect Yordanny Monegro has seen his stock rise every time he takes the mound. While pitching between two levels, the 21-year-old has kept hitters off balance with his three-pitch mix. As he moves closer to the majors, Monegro is a player fans should keep an eye on.
In ten starts this year between Rookie Ball and Single-A, the Dominican native has posted a 2.12 ERA while striking out 67 batters. He has shown excellent control and only allowed 18 walks. However, since being promoted to Salem on June 20, Monegro has taken his game to another level.
The talented right-hander began his Salem career with 18 straight scoreless innings. In his latest outing, he struck out 11 of the 19 batters he faced. While dominating outings for Monegro have become common, he showed why he is receiving more attention from scouts. His 18 swings and misses were the most by any pitcher in Low-A on Friday, according to Baseball Savant.
Additionally, like he has done all season, Monegro was able to limit base runners. Opponents are hitting .188 against him. While pitching to a 2.56 ERA with Salem, he has allowed nine hits in seven starts. In a system that is not overflowing with elite starting pitching talent, the development of Monegro has been a welcoming sign.
During his professional career, Monegro has fooled hitters with an above-average curveball and fastball that reaches 96 miles per hour. His arsenal also includes a changeup that can reach the upper 80s. According to MLB Pipeline, he is projected to be a N0. 4 starter, but that could change as he adds more velocity.
After signing with the Red Sox in 2020, Monegro’s pro debut was delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic. However, he has made up for lost time and shown why the Red Sox wanted him in their system. While the 2023 campaign is far from over, it will be exciting to see how Monegro puts the finishing touches on a breakout season.

Let’s not get too excited about a player in A ball. The last time I got excited about a 17-18 year old his name was Bryce Harper and pitcher wise it was Justin Verlander. I’ve relegated myself to the fact that our beloved franchise is being run into the ground and until JH pays attention to his baseball team and less on the soccer pitch.
