Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed has ‘big, big power’ potential
The Red Sox selected former Texas Rangers first base prospect Tyreque Reed during the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft back in 2020. Boston had interest in Reed prior to the Rule 5 Draft and were happy to land the power hitting first baseman.
Red Sox vice president of pro scouting Gus Quattlebaum had high praise for Reed after they drafted him.
“Big, physical right-handed hitting first baseman with big, big power that you see not only with the scouts’ naked eye, but also with the batted-ball data,” said Quattlebaum.
Boston assigned Reed to High-A camp to begin the 2021 season. In his first 48 games for the Greenville Drive, Reed hit .296 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs in 215 plate appearances.
The 6-foot-1, 250 pounder split time between Greenville and Portland at first base. Defensively, Reed only committed three errors at first base. While he played well at first baseman, his calling card is his raw power at the plate.
Baseball America wrote about prospects to watch with power power saying, “Reed’s carrying tool has long been his power, but his struggles with contact have led to struggles against spin and more advanced pitching. Those concerns didn’t disappear in 2021, as he struggled to replicate his High-A production upon promotion to Double-A in July. Reed is likely a system depth bat with up-and-down upside.”
Reed who will turn 25 in June isn’t considered a top prospect. The power hitting first baseman will hit plenty of homers in the minors, however he needs to work on his ability to make consistent contact with the ball. SoxProspects labels Reed as someone who is more organizational depth than an impact prospect.
