Red Sox prospect Mikey Romero makes 2024 Greenville Drive debut
Red Sox infield prospect Mikey Romero made his Greenville Drive season debut last week following a rehab stint with the FCL Red Sox.
Romero played in three games for the Drive and immediately made an impact in the lineup. In his first game back, the former first round pick went 1-for-4 with a triple and a strikeout. He followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance just two days later, with a walk and two RBI and an 0-for-4 day on May 19.
The Calif. native is hitting .348 through the first three games with Greenville, with three RBI and a .878 OPS.
Boston selected Romero 24th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Orange Lutheran High in Orange, Calif. Baseball America ranks Romero as the organization’s No. 15 overall prospect. Prior to the start of this season, Romero had been limited to 53 games due to various injuries, including a lower-back problem that ended his season last year.
The 20-year-old hit .214 with five doubles, no homers, 13 RBI, 14 walks, and two stolen bases while posting a .580 OPS. He played just 34 games in 2023, split between three affiliates.
Baseball America calls Romero’s swing “clean” and produces “excellent” contact rates, which reportedly was a main reason the Red Sox drafted him.
“I think this year, because he didn’t play, Mikey Romero took a major hit in terms of his prospect stock,” Speier told Beyond The Monster. “If memory serves, I think I had him five or seven in the system, something like that, entering the 2023 season. I think he has a very interesting skill set because he would be a very good defensive player at second base if he is what he showed in high school. He’s such a pure hitter.”
'We will keep giving him chances in high leverage spots'; Ryan Zeferjahn has WooSox manager's trust
Romero seems to have put the injuries in the rear view mirror and will get his taste at playing with Greenville for the foreseeable future. If he can continue to make strides and get stronger physically, he could look like one of the best hitters in the Red Sox system.
“I think there are some skills and attributes there that could be pretty interesting,” said Speier.
