Over the last few years, the Red Sox have invested heavily in their minor league system through trades and the draft. While the system includes potential All-Stars like Marcelo Mayer, Luis Ravelo is one prospect flying under the radar. The 19-year-old is currently ranked as Boston’s 26th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. After struggling offensively last year, Ravelo is showing why his value has been on the rise.
Through 33 games this season, the Dominican native is hitting .280 with six stolen bases. In just 118 at-bats, Ravelo has set career highs in RBI with 23, home runs with three, and doubles with seven. While his bat has taken some time to develop, the talented infielder is starting to make an impact in Single-A.
Although Ravelo’s sample size is small, he is putting a brutal 2022 campaign in the rearview mirror. In 132 at-bats last season, he posted a .197 batting average and only had five extra-base hits. While splitting time between two levels, he showed a tendency to hit weak ground balls, and his strikeout rate increased. That has not been the case this season, as his strengths have been on full display.
Ravelo has shown promise as a switch hitter due to his bat speed, and he is one of the best infield defenders in the system. He has turned 16 double plays this season and only committed 21 errors in 776 innings of work at short in the minors. In 123 innings at second, he has not committed an error.
As the talented infielder faces more advanced competition, he will need to focus on his offense. He has shown more power this season and put pressure on opposing pitchers with his speed. So far in May, he has six multi-hit games with ten days left in the month. His combination of speed and growing power will be valuable in the future.
With his MLB debut not projected to come until 2026, Ravelo has plenty of time to work on his game. He has created excitement for the future, as he wasn’t on a Top 30 prospects list two years ago. In a farm system loaded with talented infielders, Ravelo has started to set himself apart.
