Red Sox prospect Gilberto Jimenez takes Rays starter Shane McClanahan deep
Red Sox prospect Giberto Jimenez showed off some thunder in his bat on Saturday afternoon. The 22-year-old homered off Rays All-Star Shane McClanahan in the third inning.
His solo blast came in the top of the third inning, smashing it 381-feet into the left field seats. It was the only run the Sox would score in their split-squad match up from Tropicana Field.
Jimenez was once a top prospect in the Red Sox system, he has recently slide to the No. 39 ranked player with SoxProspects.
He signed with the Red Sox when he was 17 after he showcased his skills at the team’s Dominican Academy. The former consensus top-five prospect has been irrelevant the last few years.
MLB Pipeline wrote in their recent team rankings that, “He never has learned to capitalize on his blazing speed and his overly aggressive approach limits his effectiveness at the plate.” Jimenez was ranked No. 18 overall last season with MLB Pipeline, he was not ranked this season.
The Dominican Republic native will be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft in December and will be a minor league free agent in November 2024.
