Red Sox prospect David Hamilton named Eastern League Player of the Month
Portland Sea Dogs’ speedy infielder David Hamilton has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for September.
The former Texas University star played in 14 games in September. He had a slash line of .429/.508/.643 and led the league with a .429 batting average, 24 hits, 15 runs, 10 stolen bases, .508 on-base percentage and a 1.151 OPS.
Hamilton hit safely in 13 of 14 games, during that span also had eight multi-hit games.
The 25-year-old played in 119 games for the Sea Dogs hitting .251 with 16 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and a league leading 70 stolen bases.
Speed is Hamilton’s best tool which helped him earn the honors of the Red Sox Minor League Baserunner of the Year for 2022.
The 5-foot-10 infielder should figure into the Red Sox long term plans because of that blazing speed. Major League Baseball is changing the size of the bases heading into next season from 15 inches to 18 inches.
Despite the change in the size of the bases, Hamilton doesn’t think it will make a massive difference.
“The bases aren’t too much bigger to make that big of a difference,” Hamilton said to MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “I guess close plays, it will make a difference. … I love it, stealing bases. For them to try to bring it back, it’s exciting for me.”
Hamilton came to the Red Sox last December in a trade with the Brewers. The deal saw fan favorite Hunter Renfroe head to Milwaukee while the Sox acquired Jackie Bradley Jr., Hamilton and infield prospect Alex Binelas.
