Red Sox prospect Chase Meidroth has a special feel for the plate
Starting his 2023 season in High-A Greenville, it didn’t take long for Chase Meidroth to impress. While showing the ability to handle both 2nd and 3rd base, he also boasted an elite ability to work a walk. His 21.6% walk rate in 97 plate appearances helped him achieve a .495 on-base percentage. Pairing that with his .459 slugging percentage, the organization felt there was no need for him to play another game in Greenville.
Since his promotion to the Portland Sea Dogs on May 9th, he’s continued to be impressive. A promotion to AA is often described by many as the toughest adjustment to make, though it hasn’t looked that way for the 2022 4th-round pick. With his walk rate still at a well above average 17.2%, he’s showing tremendous feel for the level.
The power has not fallen off either, as some could have expected for the undersized infielder. With just about an equal amount of at-bats at each level, he has more extra-base hits at AA than he did in High-A.
Arguably the most exciting part is, after getting to watch him in person, he has a clear approach. He’s not someone hunting a walk, his feel for the zone and bat-to-ball skills are too good for him to do that. Coming into the year as a rather unknown prospect, he has consistently flown under the radar to start the year.
Even though the Sea Dogs have big names like Marcelo Mayer, Nick Yorke, and Ceddane Rafaela, keep an eye out for Chase Meidroth. If he continues at this rate, a world could be imagined where Meidroth is playing in Worcester sometime late in the minor league season.
