Red Sox promote Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester
Following the completion of the Portland Sea Dogs game on Monday, Kristian Campbell will be promoted to Triple-A Worcester, according to Chase Ford. The 22-year-old will be joining the recently promoted Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel.
Campbell, a standout performer throughout the entirety of the minor leagues in the 2024 season, will be on his third level of the year. Starting the year in High-A Greenville, Campbell caught the attention of many. In 40 games for the Drive, Campbell slashed .306/.418/.558 with 13 doubles and eight home runs.
On June 4th, Campbell was promoted to Double-A Portland. What the organization hoped to be a bigger challenge for the first time full-year pro, he showed a strong feel for the level. In 55 games with the Sea Dogs, he slashed .362/.463/.582 with 17 doubles and 8 home runs. Campbell was also able to cut his strikeout percentage significantly during his time with Portland (26.6% to 14.7), while nearly walking as much as striking out (35 walk, 38 strikeouts).
Campbell has a 186 wRC+, which is the highest out of all of the full season minor league levels. This year Campbell has been able to tap into his raw power, a part of his game that was previously untapped.
Red Sox Director of Player Development Brian Abraham detailed what went into helping Campbell reach his power potential.
“He really focused this past off-season and earlier this year on impacting the baseball, swinging the bat fast, and hitting the ball to the pull-side in the air,” Abraham said. “We made some mechanical adjustments this past off-season and earlier this spring, he’s probably not the most traditional offensive player at the plate, but it works really well for him and allows him to impact the baseball.”
The utility man has spent time between 2nd base, shortstop, center field, and left field. In what is now a crowded roster in Worcester, Campbell will be joining the WooSox on the road, as they head to Norfolk to take on the Orioles Triple-A affiliate.
