Red Sox promote 6-foot-7 pitching prospect with 2.16 ERA to High-A Greenville
The Red Sox are promoting pitching prospect Blake Wehunt from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville, according to SoxProspects editor Chris Hatfield.
Wehunt is making the jump from Low-A to High-A after an impressive start on the mound, where the right-hander posted a 2.16 ERA and 2.88 FIP with 44 strikeouts to 15 walks over 33 1/3 innings in which opposing hitters batted just .167 against him.
The right-handed hurler owns a 11.88 strikeouts per nine innings, a 32.4 percent strikeout rate, and a 56.6 percent batting average against, per FanGraphs.
Wehunt was selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Kennesaw State. Following the draft, he signed with Boston for $100,000 and made one appearance for the Florida Coast League. He tossed one scoreless frame in his professional debut.
The Drive’s newest pitcher will join a crowded rotation that includes Yordanny Monegro, who made his season debut with Greenville this weekend. Others in the rotation include, Jedixon Paez, Dalton Rogers, Juan Daniel Encarnacion, Cooper Adams, Connelly Early, and Hayden Mullins.
Greenville can move some of those arms into a bulk-innings role or continue internal promotions in the coming weeks to challenge these players at other levels.
The tall 6-foot-7 and 240-pound righty throws from a three-quarters arm, offering a three-pitch mix that consists of a 93-94 mph fastball that can reach 96 mph, an 82-85 mph sweeping slider, and an 84-85 mph splitter, per his SoxProspects scouting report.
The 23-year-old is currently ranked as the No. 38 prospect by SoxProspects.com.
