Red Sox place recently promoted infielder on the injured list with wrist sprain
The Red Sox made another roster move on Saturday, placing recently recalled Romy Gonzalez on the injured list with a left wrist sprain.
Boston added right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell from Triple-A Worcester to take Gonzalez’ spot on the roster.
Gonzalez was added to the Red Sox 26-man roster prior to the home opener on Tuesday. He then injured his left wrist on Wednesday trying to make a sliding play at shortstop.
Following the game, Gonzalez was diagnosed with a left wrist sprain and subsequently placed in the IL Saturday afternoon.
“Swing-wise, it just doesn’t feel right,” manager Alex Cora said about Gonzalez. “So we decided to put him on the IL. Hopefully just keep him away from swinging and all that stuff, he’ll get better and we’ll go from there.”
Boston is dealing with several injuries to infield position players, putting a massive strain on the internal organizational depth.
Trevor Story is out for the season following left shoulder surgery, Vaughn Grissom just started his 20-day rehab stint with the WooSox on Friday night, Enmanuel Valdez is dealing with a left thumb contusion and Rafael Devers has a nagging sore shoulder.
Prior to being placed on the injured list, Gonzalez tore the ball off while in Worcester. The 27-year-old has gone 9-for-28 (.321 batting average) with three homers, one double, two triples, one stolen base, and a 1.196 OPS.
Gonzalez ranked among the top players in the International League. He’s fifth in RBIs (10), third in homers (3), sixth in slugging percentage (.821%), 10th in OPS (1.196), tied for first with triples (2), and sixth in total bases (23).
