Red Sox pitching prospect Jeremy Wu-Yelland undergoes Tommy John surgery
Wu-Yelland was selected in the fourth round back in the 2020 NFL Draft
Red Sox pitching prospect Jeremy Wu-Yelland underwent Tommy John surgery this week. The news was first announced by SoxProspects Chris Hatfield and then was confirmed by Wu-Yelland.
Boston drafted Wu-Yelland in the fourth round of the pandemic shortened-season MLB Draft. The 6-foot-2 lefty was selected out of Hawaii. He came into the 2022 campaign ranked by Baseball America as the No. 31 prospect in Bostonβs farm system.
Last season he finished 2021 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 23 starts for Low-A Salem and High-A Greenville in 2021.
Prior to the start of Spring Training, Wu-Yelland spoke with MassLiveβs Christopher Smith. The left-handed hurler spoke about goals coming into 2022. Unfortunately, those goals will be put on hold until he is healthy.
βRight now I want to get healthy,β Wu-Yelland said in his interview with MassLive. βThatβs the main priority. I want to be more consistent. I want to go out and do everything they ask of me and hopefully finish the year at Double A. I think that would be a good goal for me.β
Wu-Yelland will now be sidelined between 12-15 months as he rehabs from surgery. He will be looking to take the mound at some point in 2023.
