Red Sox option Ryan Brasier to Triple-A Worcester
Brasier has struggled this season with Boston, pitching to a 6.28 ERA
Many fans will read the headline to this article and rejoice. The Red Sox will option right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier to Triple-A Worcester, per The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams.
The move will clear a roster spot for starter Michael Wacha who will return from the injured list.
Brasier has struggled this season and has been an obvious candidate to be sent down. The 34-year-old hurler has struggled to the tune of a 6.28 ERA with 16 strikeouts to three walks over 18 appearances.
Brasier gave up his fifth home run of the season to the Mariners rookie phenom Julio Rodriguez in the team’s 12-6 win on Thursday night.
Wacha will return from the injured list and start on Friday night. The righty missed the last few weeks and was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 5) due to left intercostal irritation.
Wacha tossed a 35-pitch simulated game on Monday and a short bullpen session earlier Wednesday afternoon. The Red Sox liked what they saw in Wacha and he is healthy enough to return to the rotation.
Boston is 4-1 this season when Wacha is on the bump. The 30-year-old has been extremely impressive so far this season. He’s posted a 1.38 ERA and 3.89 FIP with 19 strikeouts to 11 walks over five starts.
