Red Sox option left-hander, potentially opening roster spot for new trade addition
The Red Sox made a roster move on Monday, optioning left-handed reliever Cam Booser to Triple-A Worcester, the team announced. The southpaw has posted a 3.00 ERA in 27 outings for the Red Sox this season.
Booser was recently recalled ahead of the Yankees series in the Bronx after the club placed right-handed pitcher Chris Martin on the injured list with right elbow inflammation.
There was speculation that the Red Sox would go with three lefties in the bullpen through the All-Star break. The addition of Wingenter allows the Red Sox to add a fresh arm to their bullpen for the final six games leading up to the break.
With Booser heading to the WooSox, it opens a roster spot for new right-handed reliever Trey Wingenter, whom the Red Sox acquired on Saturday night from the Tigers.
Wingenter, 30, has been with the Tigers Triple-A affiliate this season and has recorded a 3.31 ERA in 26 appearances.
Boston has to add Wingenter to their 40-man roster due to an assignment clause in his contract, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
The Alabama native is the second pitcher the Red Sox have acquired in the last week. Boston claimed righty Alex Speas off waivers from the Astros last week. He made his WooSox debut on Saturday, tossing a scoreless inning and recording a hold.
The Red Sox haven’t formally announced Wingenter, but the expectation is that he will be added to the 26-man roster prior to the start of the series versus the Athletics.
